Towards Future High-Performanc Computing

Johannes Gebert (HLRS)

Abstract

High-performance computing (HPC) systems have become significantly faster, with improvements of multiple orders of magnitude. Physical limits are on the horizon, while researchers still pose questions that require additional orders of magnitude of performance. The talk outlines the need for such simulations and the current state of computing them. While innovative technologies may further accelerate HPC systems, they must meet specific criteria for sensible use in productive systems. We provide an overview of the ongoing efforts at HLRS, describing the basic characteristics of the hardware platforms covered. We cover directions for benchmarking and software development.
