Ocean and Climate Prediction and Societal Application Using Earth Simulator¶

Abstract¶
Ocean and climate variability such as marine heatwaves, storm surges, floods, and droughts poses serious threats to human life and the natural environment, leading to considerable economic losses. Extensive efforts have been undertaken to deeply understand and accurately predict ocean and climate variability through the use of satellite and in-situ observations, as well as supercomputer simulations. Nevertheless, the application of scientific knowledge and accurate predictions to practical societal actions remains inadequate, primarily due to insufficient engagement with local stakeholders. To address these challenges, JAMSTEC is in the process of developing an online visualization system, termed the Ocean Digital Twin, utilizing the Earth Simulator. This system aims to present ocean and climate predictions in a manner that is easily comprehensible to the general public. The Ocean Digital Twin incorporates various tools, including coastal ocean prediction for safe navigation and efficient fishing, as well as global climate prediction for sustainable agriculture and the prevention of infectious diseases. The Ocean Digital Twin functions as a crucial online platform for mitigating ocean and climate risks and for fostering a safe, resilient, and healthy society.
